Areas of photographic practice B
This module is designed to be experimental. Using a media other than stills based or camera
based image making you must devise a body of work that pushes the conventions, and results in
you working outside of your comfort zone (aesthetically/ conceptually/ stylistically).
“A photograph presents itself not only as a visual representation, but as evidence,
more convincing than a painting because of the unimpeachable mechanical means
whereby it was made. We do not trust the artist’s flattering hand; but we do trust
film, and shadows, and light.”
John Updike
[Writer, b. 1932, Shillington, Pennsylvania, d. 2009, Boston, Massachusetts.]
“Despite the powerful impression of reality (imparted by the mechanical
registration of a moment of reflected light according to the rules of normal
perspective), photographs, in themselves, are fragmentary and incomplete
utterances.”
Allan Sekula [Photographer, writer, and theorist, b. 1951, Erie, Pennsylvania, d. 2013, Los Angeles.]

Vik Muniz
born in 1961, São Paulo, Brazil.Muniz is a Brazilian artist and photographer. Initially a sculptor, Muniz grew interested with the photographic representations of his work, eventually focusing completely on photography. Primarily working in series, Muniz incorporates the use of quotidian objects such as diamonds, sugar, thread, chocolate syrup and garbage in his practice to create bold, ironic and often deceiving imagery, gleaned from the pages of pop culture and art history.
FOOD ART

The food art body of work by Vik Muniz is such interesting way to create and show iconic images of famous people such as Jackson Pollock and Marilyn Monroe. the Jackson Pollock image created by chocolate sauce shows off the passion and the light and shade of his world famous splatter paintings. The image of the sugar cane worker made out of sugar paper and sugar not only shows exactly what this boy does but also the detail of the image shows the light and shade of the boys face. The image was made using Vik Muniz hands as the finger marks on the image create a face that is more true to an actual face as there are slight imperfections making the image more realistic. the boy made of sugar is my favourite of this collection from the Food art body of images as the product used in this image reflects the livelihood of the boy therefore for me this image is the strongest out of these 6 images.
